Australasian Business Intelligence, March, 2006

Byline: Julia May

Mar 26, 2006 (BRW – ABIX via COMTEX) — Central Queensland property continues to enjoy strong capital growth due to sea- seeking investors. A commercial building boom is parallelling the migration rush, with Rockhampton and Hervey Bay emerging as in- demand tourist hubs. Airports at both centres, each owned by their respective city councils, have been upgraded recently to cope with increased patronage. In Hervey Bay

large chains such as Peppers Retreats & Resorts are investing. And in Zilzie, near Rockhampton, a $A1bn resort and residential

project is underway. House prices in Hervey Bay have doubled in the past three years

Usability studies have shown

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Usability studies have shown that web site visitors instinctively look in these areas first.

Wherever you decide to place your navigation menu, remember that consistency is important. The most important thing is to place your navigation menu in the same spot on every one of your web pages. If you use an image to represent a navigational button, use the same image and the same color for that image on each page of your website. For example, if you use an image of a green house in the left hand corner of your web page as your “Home” navigational link, use the same green house image in the left hand corner of every one of your web pages to designate the “Home” link.

Your visitor should be able to find what they are looking for within 3 clicks of your home page.

Today?s small business owners are smarter

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Today?s small business owners are smarter than ever about strategic and tactical marketing. They are becoming more and more comfortable with its cumbersome terminology and are familiar with concepts such as customer ?touches?, or contacts.

Unfortunately, however, many small- to medium-sized business owners are spending way too much time concentrating on the frequency of their messages, rather than developing the right message.

For example, how many ads have you seen from dentists who proclaim to give you a ?better smile?? Yes, the actual size, orientation, color, graphics and the like may be different, but the message is the same-old-same-old. Have these dentists, then, differentiated themselves and become memorable? The obvious answer is ?no?.

However, is any impact better than none at all? Marketing experts and business owners alike often debate this issue. On one hand, even a so-so ad can generate name recognition? an important objective. Alternatively, others argue that poorly-designed marketing communications is at best, weak and at worst, damaging AND memorable.

It is reasonable to expect that a marketing consultant or advertising agency will create a distinctive and positive ad and message every time? Yes.

In fact, as

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

In fact, as long as ownership can be proven, it often doesn’t even matter if the physical certificate exists. The same can?t be said for paper money.

You can insure against these problems, and go to great lengths to assure proper storage conditions, but all of this costs money and adds to the cost of the investment, often for many years before there is going to be any return at all.

Today, coin collecting is one of the world?s most popular hobbies. Amateur collectors enjoy coins for their beauty and rarity. Added to this is the excitement of searching for and finding specific coins and the challenge of identifying new ones.

Why is coin collecting thriving and stamp collecting dying? Coins are still being used and are still fascinating. It is an investment as well as a hobby. Coins continue to go up in value while many stamps are at the peak value they will ever receive. Furthermore, many are going down in value.

Enjoy your hobby, and consider whatever you invest in it to be pleasure money, the same way you would count money you spent going to ball games, or dining out, or buying new clothes.

Question: Is our accepted income generation system the best?

Question: Is our accepted income generation system the best? by Jen Quigley

How many of us stop to question “the system” of how we earn our income? Do we just accept what life has dealt us and not aspire to do better? Are we really so powerless and unable to achieve otherwise? Do we want to opt out of today’s rat race without paying a price?

We were taught to go to school, to try hard to achieve the best grades we could, maybe go on to tertiary education, get a degree and finally, apply all of our hard-earned knowledge to the end result – a career. This was in the hope that we might earn a good living with a decent salary that would carry us through the rest of our working life and maybe even set us up for retirement. Those who have achieved in this way believe they are at the successful end of the system’s spectrum.

If you didn’t do so well at school, university was out of the question. You may have ended up with no particular career, just a job that requires you to work eight hours per day. You possibly tough it out from Monday to Friday, only to gasp with relief when the two days off that you are allowed finally arrive. If you are ambitious and want to climb the corporate ladder, you might end up working more than your designated eight hours and spend half to two-thirds of your time at some office or company. And as you strive for successive promotions, you are rewarded with higher levels of responsibility which may require you to work some of your weekend too, just to stay on top.

The trade-off for working longer hours is less time at home with your loved ones and less time to enjoy the fruits of your labour. If you chose to become a “career” person, there may not be any loved ones waiting at home for you at the end of your day, other than perhaps your pet. If you are trading time for money, why is trading more time for more money to buy more ‘things’ looked upon as success? Who invented this stupid system anyway? There must be a smarter way.

At the other end of the spectrum are those who depend on “the system” for handouts in the form of social security, litigation or inheritance

Hill slope development feasible

Hill slope development feasible

0 Comments | New Straits Times, Jul 29, 2010

THE public, especially those living on hill slopes and elevated areas, must be more aware of issues such as soil erosion and drainage to ensure their safety and prevent untoward incidents.

International Research Centre on Disaster Prevention (IRCDIP), Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA director Prof Dr Roslan Zainal Abidin says this is crucial as a monitoring system would provide early warnings to the public.

“People fear living on slopes as there have been many cases of disasters in those areas. But with the right knowledge, living on hill slopes can be safe.”

Roslan believes the best way to educate the public on matters pertaining to hill slopes would be through roadshows or public meetings between residents, the local authorities and related agencies.

“This is also the quickest and most efficient method. They can gather the residents during the weekends and go to a nearby hillside and brief them on what to look out for.

“This way, the public will be able to give their feedback to the authorities in the event there is soil or land movement owing to heavy rainfall, or if there are early signs of erosion in their areas,” he adds.

One of the most basic things that residents can look out for is erosion.

Roslan says erosion patterns are an early indicator of soil movement in the area.

Additionally, simple things such as being aware of blocked drains and observing soil texture are also part of an early monitoring mechanism.

Roslan says at present, the regulations and requirements for building on hill slopes are sufficient but as with all projects, there must be ample monitoring before, during and after the development was completed.

“Rules and regulations must be adhered to and enforced,” he says, adding that all technical agencies involved must also play their role to ensure early detection of any potential disasters.

“There is no reason why hill slopes cannot be developed, provided the area is thoroughly assessed and the level of risk identified.”

At each level of risk, there is an appropriate engineering solution to ensure the safety of the development project.

Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd’s head of Geotechnical Forensic Unit, Mohd Taufik Haron, says all hill slopes and elevated areas must be assessed holistically, taking into account many factors that were inter-dependent.

He adds that local authorities should advise house buyers before they make their decision on whether to buy properties near hill slopes.

“This is necessary so as to restore public confidence. This assures the public that the government is performing its duty.”

Generally, slope failure in Malaysia is not only caused by slope geometry (for example, slope gradient more than 35 degree) but also other factors as well, such as soil and rock engineering properties, drainage system, ground water table, geological factor, and rainfall intensity.

Therefore, to minimise the potential of landslides, the above mentioned contributing factors should be considered as a holistic approach.

In the meantime, says Taufik, the community plays an important role in helping to prevent or reduce landslide risk, in that they have a choice to either live in mountainous areas or in a “safer” location.

However, for those already living on hillsides, they do not have to worry if the developers have started developing the second phase of the highlands, as a rigorous approval process would have already been undertaken by them and the local authorities.

At present, development is allowed for hill slopes and elevated areas only if four criteria are met, which are location, land use, intensity (density, plinth and plot ratio) and adherence to all required guidelines by the technical agencies involved.

The sensitivity of an area environmentally is also taken into account

The question typically

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

The question typically sounds like this ? in our Great Plains CustomerID is different from bank customer ID. This is right, but each check has Bank Account Number and Bank Routine Number, identifying the customer, all you need to do is ? carefully review first processing and enter this customer info, or open it here: Cards>>Sales>>Lockbox Bank Details ? and next time you get check from this customer ? lockbox will catch and identify it. This is true even in the case of hand written check.

? Invoice Number Matching. This is a bit tricky question, and you can?t catch invoice number from hand written check. However when we are talking about large businesses ? these checks have invoices printed. If you bank has so-called Automatic Clearinghouse (ACH) lockbox file format ? it can provide invoice number line if the check is issued by corporate or midsize established business. In the case of ACH header will have prefix 6 and line prefix 4.

? No Invoice Number Matching. This is still OK if you have a lot of small customers with one or few outstanding invoices. In this case ? use autoapply method.
